How to find a good Muslim wife: what really matters

Many Muslim men ask how to find a good wife, and many do not know where to begin. The answer starts with knowing what you are looking for, and what a good marriage needs. This article covers what to look for, where to search and how to go about it with sincerity. It is general guidance, not a ruling.

Start with the advice of the Prophet ﷺ

A hadith in Bukhari and Muslim says that a woman is married for four reasons: her wealth, her lineage, her beauty and her religion, and that you should choose the religious one. This does not mean that beauty or compatibility do not matter, but it does set priorities. Character and faith come first.

What to look for

  • Faith and character: honesty, kindness, patience and a sincere relationship with Allah.
  • Shared goals: where you want to live, whether she wants to work, how many children, and how you see family life.
  • Communication: whether you can talk openly and disagree respectfully.
  • Family values: how she and her family treat others, and how they would relate to yours.
  • Attraction and comfort: it is natural and acceptable to want someone you find attractive, and to feel at ease with.

What to avoid

  • Looking for a perfect person, who does not exist.
  • Choosing only on looks, wealth or background.
  • Comparing her to people on social media.
  • Hiding things about yourself, such as a past marriage, debt or a health condition.

Be a good husband first

Many men focus on what they want and forget what they offer. Be clear about your faith, work, money and plans, and be someone a wali would trust with his daughter. See the rights of husband and wife.

Where to meet someone

Approach with respect

If you are introduced through a family or a wali, be courteous and clear about your intentions. Ask good questions, listen carefully, and do not pressure anyone. See questions to ask before nikah and how to start a conversation on a marriage app.

Pray, consult and decide

Pray istikhara, ask people who know you both, and do not drag out a decision. See istikhara for marriage and dua for marriage.
