Sunni Muslim marriage

A marriage app for Sunni Muslims who want nikah, not a maybe.

Sharing a sect is not everything in a marriage, but for many people it is the starting point. Zawaj helps Sunni Muslims meet others who share their beliefs, their practice and their intention to marry — with your family involved as much as you want.

Sunni Islam and marriage

The majority tradition — and still a lot of variety.

Sunni Muslims make up the large majority of the world’s Muslims — most estimates put it somewhere around 85–90%. That covers an enormous range of people: Arab, South Asian, Turkish, Malay, African, European and convert Muslims, each with their own customs around engagement, family introductions and the wedding itself.

Because the community is so large, “Sunni” on its own doesn’t tell you very much about whether two people will be compatible. How someone prays, how they understand modesty, how involved their family expects to be and how they hope to raise children usually matter far more. Zawaj is built so you can search on those things, not just a label.

The four madhabs

Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, Hanbali — when it matters.

Most Sunni Muslims follow, or were raised within, one of the four schools of jurisprudence. In everyday married life the differences rarely cause friction, but a few can come up during the marriage process itself. The best-known example is the wali: the majority of scholars hold that a woman’s guardian must be part of her nikah, while the Hanafi school allows an adult woman to contract her own marriage, though it still strongly encourages family involvement.

Differences like this are rarely deal-breakers, but they are worth naming early — especially when the two families come from different regions and traditions. If you are unsure what applies to you, ask a scholar you trust, and see our guide on involving your wali.

Practice level

Finding someone at the same place in their deen.

Two people can both describe themselves as practising and mean quite different things. One may pray every salah on time and attend weekly classes; another may be working towards consistency. Neither is wrong, but a big gap in expectations can cause strain after the nikah. Be honest on your profile about where you are, and ask the same of anyone you speak to.

Our guide to balancing deen and dunya when choosing a spouse and our list of questions to ask before nikah can help you raise these topics naturally.

Sunni–Shia marriages

If your match follows a different tradition.

Some members are open to meeting Shia Muslims, and some are not. Views among scholars and within families differ on Sunni–Shia marriages, and it is not our place to give rulings. What we do recommend is honesty from the very first conversation: say where you stand, ask how your families are likely to feel, and if you are seriously considering it, seek guidance together from a scholar you both trust.
