12 signs he's serious about marriage — and the red flags to watch for
You have been talking for a while. He is kind, the conversations flow, and you can picture a future. But a quiet question keeps coming back: is he actually serious about marrying me? In Islam, getting to know someone is meant to lead somewhere — towards nikah or a respectful goodbye. Here is how to tell which way this one is heading.
12 signs he is serious about marriage
1. He wants to involve your wali and family
This is the clearest sign of all. A man with good intentions is not afraid of your father, brother or wali — he wants to speak to them, because that is how a marriage begins. See involving your wali.
2. He talks about timelines
Not in a pushy way, but honestly: when he hopes to marry, what needs to happen first, how long he expects things to take.
3. He is consistent
He replies reliably, keeps his word and does not disappear for days and then return as if nothing happened. Consistency is what seriousness looks like day to day.
4. He is transparent about his life
He tells you about his work, his finances, his family situation and anything significant from his past — including a previous marriage — without you having to drag it out of him.
5. He wants you to meet his family
Men who are serious want their families to know about you. Men who are not tend to keep you hidden.
6. He respects your boundaries
He does not push for private meetings, personal photos or conversations you are not comfortable with. If you say no once, he does not ask again.
7. He asks the important questions
He wants to know about your deen, your goals, children, where you would live and how you see family life. He is weighing up a marriage, not just enjoying a conversation. Our 20 questions to ask before nikah show the kind of ground you should be covering.
8. He discusses the practicalities of nikah
Mahr, the nikah itself, the walima, where you would live afterwards — a man who is ready talks about these things, even if they are months away.
9. He takes your goals seriously
Your studies, career, family commitments and plans are part of the conversation, not an afterthought.
10. He is honest when things are uncertain
If something is holding him back — a job, a family situation, a decision he needs to make — he tells you rather than leaving you guessing.
11. His actions match his words
He does not just say he is serious; he arranges the video call, speaks to your family, and follows through on the next step.
12. He is moving towards a decision
Seriousness has direction. After a reasonable time, he wants to either move forward or end things kindly — not drift indefinitely. Our guide on how long to talk before nikah covers what is reasonable.
Red flags that he is not serious
- He wants to keep it secret. "Let's not tell our families yet" with no end date is a warning sign, not romance.
- He avoids your wali. Excuses about why he cannot speak to your family usually mean he does not want to.
- "Let's see where it goes." On a marriage app, that phrase usually means he is not looking for marriage.
- Pressure for photos or private meetings. Respectful men do not ask for private photos or push to meet alone.
- Any request for money. No matter the story — an emergency, a visa, a business problem — this is the biggest red flag of all.
- Hot and cold behaviour. Intense attention one week, silence the next. See ghosting on Muslim marriage apps.

How to ask him directly
You do not have to wait and wonder. It is completely reasonable — and in keeping with Islamic adab — to ask: "I'm looking for marriage. Where do you see this going, and when would you be ready to speak to my family?" A serious man will be relieved you asked. Someone who is not will often reveal it in how he answers.
If the answer isn't the one you hoped for
It hurts, but it is far better to know now than after months more of waiting. Thank him, end things kindly and protect your time for someone who is ready. Make dua, pray istikhara when a serious proposal comes along, and read dealing with rejection if you need encouragement.
On Zawaj, men start with a proposal rather than a swipe, so marriage is on the table from the first message — and you stay in control of who you speak to, and when your family gets involved.
