Marriage guide

The age of marriage in Islam and in UK law.

People often ask what the minimum age of marriage is in Islam. The question matters in the UK, because the law and the community sometimes seem to point in different directions. This guide explains the general religious principles and the legal position, with an emphasis on maturity, readiness and free consent. It is general information, not legal advice or a ruling, so ask a scholar and, where relevant, check the law.

What Islam emphasises

Classical sources speak of maturity (bulugh) and, in many discussions, sound judgement (rushd) and readiness for the responsibilities of marriage. Scholars have discussed these in different ways, and Muslim-majority countries set different minimum ages in law. What nearly all agree on is that marriage requires the real, free consent of both people.

Readiness matters more than a number

Marriage involves faith, emotional maturity, money, home and often children. Many contemporary scholars and Islamic organisations stress that people should be mature enough to understand and fulfil those duties, and that no one should be married before they are ready. See balancing deen and dunya.

UK law

In England and Wales the minimum age to marry or enter a civil partnership is 18, including for religious marriages and marriages that take place abroad. It is a criminal offence to cause a child to marry, or to take someone abroad to marry under the legal age. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, so check the position where you live.

Forced marriage is a crime

Forcing someone to marry, whether by pressure, threats, deception or taking them abroad, is a crime in the UK. It is also contrary to Islam, which requires free consent. If you or someone you know is at risk, contact the police, and see the government’s Forced Marriage Unit guidance on gov.uk. In an emergency, call 999. See arranged vs forced marriage in Islam.

A nikah is not a way around the law

A nikah held for someone under the legal age is not made acceptable by being religious. Imams and mosques in the UK are expected to follow the law, and anyone asked to conduct such a nikah should refuse and report concerns.

What a good age to marry looks like

There is no single answer. Many people marry in their twenties or later, once they have a settled faith, education or work, and a clear idea of what they want. Take your time, consult family and a scholar, and do not let anyone rush you. See questions to ask before nikah.
