Nikah and legal marriage in Germany.
In Germany, only a civil marriage at the Standesamt is legally valid. A religious ceremony alone does not create a legal marriage, and a spouse married only by nikah may lack legal protection. Since 2009, holding a religious ceremony without a civil marriage is no longer an offence, but it still does not make you married in law. Check current rules with the registry office.
