Muslim marriage app · South Africa

A Muslim marriage app for South Africa.

From the Bo-Kaap to Durban’s Grey Street and the suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa’s Muslim community has deep roots and close family ties. Zawaj helps South African Muslims find someone who is serious about nikah — not a casual chat.

The South African context

Close-knit communities — and a small circle.

South Africa’s Muslims include Cape Malay families in Cape Town with centuries of history, Indian-heritage communities in Durban and Gauteng, and a growing number of Somali, Malawian and other African Muslims, as well as converts. Mosques, madrasahs and family networks still shape how many people find a spouse.

But in close-knit communities, everyone tends to know everyone, and the right person may simply be outside your circle — in another city, or another community altogether. Zawaj widens that circle while keeping intentions clear, so you are only ever talking to people who want marriage too.

Good to know

Is a Muslim marriage recognised in South Africa?

For many years, a nikah on its own was not recognised as a civil marriage in South African law, which left many spouses — especially wives — without legal protection on divorce or death. In 2022 the Constitutional Court ruled that this lack of recognition was unconstitutional and gave interim protection, for example in divorce matters, while Parliament passes legislation. A Muslim Marriages Bill has been under consideration.

Because the law is still developing, many couples also register a civil marriage. Some imams are designated marriage officers who can register the marriage with Home Affairs at the same time as the nikah. Check the current position with a qualified lawyer, your imam or Home Affairs before the day. For the religious side, read what nikah requires, and for other countries see is a nikah legally recognised?

Is a Muslim marriage recognised in South Africa?

Historically, a nikah on its own was not recognised as a civil marriage. In 2022 the Constitutional Court found this unconstitutional and gave interim protection — for example in divorce matters — while Parliament legislates, and a Muslim Marriages Bill has been under consideration. Many couples also register a civil marriage. Check the current position with a qualified lawyer or your imam.

How do I get a Muslim marriage certificate in South Africa?

Your mosque or Muslim judicial body can usually issue a nikah certificate. For legal registration, some imams are designated marriage officers who can register the marriage with Home Affairs at the same time; otherwise you can register a civil marriage separately. Ask your imam before the day.
