Halal dating rules: what is allowed before marriage?
"Is dating halal?" is one of the most common questions young Muslims ask, especially in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, where dating is the default way people meet. The short answer is that most scholars do not permit romantic dating, but they do permit something close to what many people mean by it: getting to know someone with a serious intention of marriage, within limits. This guide sets out the commonly accepted rules.
The principle: intention and limits
Islam encourages marriage and does not ask you to choose a spouse blind. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged looking at a prospective spouse, and families have always arranged meetings. What is discouraged is a private relationship with no commitment, because it leads to what Islam asks us to avoid: being alone together, physical contact and emotional entanglement without the protection of marriage.
Commonly accepted rules
- A clear marriage intention. You are both looking for nikah, and you say so.
- Purposeful conversation. Talk about faith, values, family, finances, children and where you want to live.
- No private time alone. Meet in public or with a family member or chaperone present.
- No physical contact. Before nikah, the other person is not your spouse.
- Family involvement. Bring in the wali or a parent when it becomes serious, not as an afterthought.
- A sensible timeline. Do not drag it out. Decide, or move on.
Where scholars differ
Scholars differ on how much conversation before involving a family is acceptable, whether video calls are fine, and how strict the "chaperone" rule is in practice. Some take a stricter view, and others a more flexible one. Speak to a scholar you trust about your own situation.
What halal dating looks like in practice
- Meet through a route that signals seriousness: family, community or a marriage app.
- Have a few respectful conversations with clear questions. See questions to ask before nikah.
- Involve your wali or a parent. See involving your wali.
- Meet with family or in public. See halal date ideas.
- Pray istikhara and decide. See istikhara for marriage.
Why a marriage app is different from a dating app
Swiping apps are designed to keep you browsing. A marriage app can do the opposite. Zawaj uses written proposals instead of likes, shows that everyone is there for nikah and lets your wali or family join a conversation with the Chaperone/Wali feature. It is free to join on iOS and Android. Read are Muslim dating apps haram? and halal dating vs marriage apps.
