Halal date ideas in the UK: where to meet when it is for marriage

Once you have spoken and both of you are serious, many couples want to meet in person. For Muslims, "date" here means a short, public, purposeful meeting where you are getting to know each other for marriage. These ideas work well across the UK, from London and Birmingham to Manchester, Glasgow and Cardiff. Scholars differ on details, so follow the guidance of a scholar you trust and what your family expects.

The ground rules

  • Meet in public or with a chaperone present, not alone in a private space.
  • Keep it short and daytime, with a clear purpose.
  • Have your questions ready. See questions to ask before nikah.
  • Tell your wali or a parent where you are and who you are meeting.

Ideas that work

1. A halal café or tea room

Choose somewhere quiet enough to talk, in a public place and in the daytime. Check the menu is halal or meet for tea and dessert.

2. A walk in a park, with someone nearby

Walking and talking takes the pressure off eye contact. Bring a sibling or friend who walks a few steps behind, or meet where families are around.

3. A museum or exhibition

Free or low-cost museums give you plenty to talk about, and you can see how the other person reacts to ideas. Check the opening times and plan a time limit.

4. A family meal

Meeting at a family gathering or a restaurant with relatives present is common and gives both families a chance to meet.

5. Volunteering or a community event

Seeing how someone treats other people tells you a lot. Attend a charity event, mosque open day or lecture, with the chaperone around.

6. A video call with family nearby

If one of you lives far away, a call with a relative in the room can work well. See video calls before nikah and long-distance Muslim marriages.

What to avoid

  • Private meetings behind closed doors, such as a flat or car.
  • Late-night meetings, or anywhere alcohol is the focus.
  • Physical contact, which is not permitted before nikah.
  • Meeting before you are both serious and before someone in your family knows.

After the meeting

Take time to reflect, pray istikhara and talk to your family before you decide. See istikhara for marriage and signs he is serious about marriage.
