Can a Muslim woman marry a non-Muslim man?
This question is painful for many Muslim women who have met someone they care about, and for their families. The position of the major schools of thought is clear, and there are also compassionate ways to approach it. This guide sets out the general view, and what women in this situation can do. It is general information, not a ruling, so speak to a scholar you trust.
What scholars say
Scholars are in broad agreement that a Muslim woman may not marry a non-Muslim man, citing the Quran (2:221 and 60:10) and the long consensus of the community. This applies whether he is Christian, Jewish, atheist or of another faith. This differs from the ruling for Muslim men, which is discussed in can a Muslim man marry a Christian woman?
If he accepts Islam
If a man sincerely accepts Islam, he can marry a Muslim woman like anyone else. The key word is sincerely. A conversion made only to marry is something scholars treat with caution, so a good approach is to let him learn about Islam in his own time, without pressure from you or your family. See converts and marriage.
What not to do
- Do not marry in secret or without a wali, hoping it will be accepted later.
- Do not rely on a civil marriage alone and treat it as an Islamic marriage.
- Do not pressure him to convert, or fake a conversion.
Doing these things can cause serious harm to you, to him and to any children.
Talking to your family
It may help to speak to a trusted imam, relative or counsellor first, so that you are supported and not judged. Approach your family honestly, and be ready for strong feelings on both sides. See involving your wali and Islamic marriage counselling.
If you are still looking for a husband
If you are thinking again about the kind of person you want to marry, Zawaj is a Muslim marriage app built around nikah. It has written proposals instead of swiping, a Chaperone/Wali feature so family can be involved and photo privacy, and it is free to join. See Zawaj for women in the UK.
