Do you have to convert to marry a Muslim?

Many people who are not Muslim fall for a Muslim partner and ask whether they have to convert to marry. The honest answer depends on who is marrying whom, and on what scholars say about the situation. It also depends on sincerity, which matters more than any rule. This article sets out the general picture. It is not a ruling, so please ask a scholar you trust.

If you are a woman marrying a Muslim man

Mainstream scholars permit a Muslim man to marry a chaste woman who follows Christianity or Judaism, based on the Quran (5:5), without her converting. Many scholars add conditions and some advise caution. If a woman follows another faith, such as Hinduism, or none, most scholars say she would need to accept Islam first. If you are a man marrying a Muslim woman

Scholars are in broad agreement that a Muslim woman may marry only a Muslim man. A man who wants to marry her would first need to accept Islam, sincerely. See can a Muslim woman marry a non-Muslim man?

Sincerity matters most

Islam teaches that there is no compulsion in religion. A conversion made only to satisfy a partner or a family can cause pain later. If you are thinking about Islam, take your time to read, ask questions and speak to people who practise it. If you do decide to convert, it should be your own decision. See converts and marriage and Zawaj for reverts.

Talk about the big questions

  • How will you each practise your faith at home?
  • What will you teach your children, and how?
  • How will your families react, and how will you handle that together?
  • What will food, prayer, Ramadan and festivals look like?

The legal side in the UK

A civil marriage is open to people of any faith, and a nikah can be held alongside it for a Muslim couple. Check the requirements with your register office. See how to register a Muslim marriage in the UK.

If you are a new Muslim looking for a spouse

Many reverts want to marry another Muslim. A wali can be a question for new Muslims whose family are not Muslim. See who can be a wali for a revert. Zawaj is a Muslim marriage app for people ready for nikah, with a Chaperone/Wali feature, written proposals and photo privacy. It is free to join.
