Engagement in Islam (khitbah): meaning and rules
In Islam an engagement is called khitbah. It is a promise to marry, not a marriage, and it comes with its own etiquette. This guide covers what khitbah is, what is and is not allowed, and the common questions. Scholars differ on some details, so ask a scholar you trust.
What is khitbah?
Khitbah is the proposal and the agreement to marry. It happens before the nikah. The man (or his family) asks for the woman’s hand, usually through her wali, and if both sides agree, they are engaged.
An engagement does not make the couple husband and wife, and it does not make anything between them permissible that was not before. The nikah is what changes that.
What is generally allowed
- Looking at each other at the time of proposal, to know who you may marry. This is encouraged by the Sunnah.
- Meeting with family or a chaperone present to talk about expectations, values and plans.
- Gifts from one side to the other, as a gesture of goodwill.
- Getting to know each other in a respectful, purposeful way, with limits.
What is generally not allowed
- Being alone together, or physical contact
- Treating the engagement as a marriage
- Proposing to a woman who is already engaged, until the engagement ends

How long should an engagement be?
There is no fixed period. Many scholars advise not to keep an engagement long, because the couple are not yet married and temptation and pressure can grow. A shorter engagement, or going straight to nikah, is common.
Can an engagement be broken?
Yes. It is a promise, not a binding contract, and either side can withdraw, ideally with honesty and good manners and without harming the other person’s reputation. Scholars differ on what happens to gifts, so many families agree it in advance.
Engagement ring and ceremony
Rings and engagement parties are a cultural custom rather than a religious requirement. Many Muslims have one, keeping it modest and observing the usual rules. See the Muslim engagement ceremony.
Looking for someone to propose to?
Zawaj is a Muslim marriage app built around nikah: written proposals instead of swiping, a Chaperone/Wali feature so family can be involved, and calls only once a proposal is accepted. It is free to join on iOS and Android.
