How to find an imam to conduct your nikah in the UK.

Many couples start planning a nikah and then ask the same question: who will conduct it? In the UK you can usually ask a local imam, a mosque or an Islamic centre, and some imams will travel to a home or hall. This guide explains how to find one, what to ask and how to avoid common problems. It is general information, not legal advice or a religious ruling.

Start with your local mosque

Most mosques can arrange a nikah or put you in touch with an imam who does. Some ask you to be a member or to have a connection to the mosque, and some have set days and a short waiting list. Ask early.

What to ask the imam

  • Do you conduct nikahs at the mosque, at home or at a venue?
  • Is the mosque registered for marriages, and what else do we need to make it legal? See how to register a Muslim marriage in the UK.
  • What documents and witnesses do you need?
  • Do you give a written nikah certificate, and is there a nikah nama form?
  • Do you meet the couple beforehand, and do you speak to the wali?
  • Are there fees or a donation expected? Ask openly.

Witnesses and the wali

Most schools of thought require a wali for the bride and two witnesses. Ask the imam what they require. If a bride does not have a Muslim family, see who can be a wali for a revert.

A nikah at home or at a venue

Many couples have a short nikah at home or in a hall, followed by a meal. That is fine, as long as the religious conditions are met and the imam is willing to attend. Remember that a nikah at home is not a legal marriage on its own, so plan the civil side too.

Choosing carefully

  • Choose someone who explains the contract, including mahr and conditions, and does not rush.
  • Be wary of anyone who offers a nikah without a wali or witnesses, or in secret.
  • Be cautious about “quick nikah” services you cannot verify.
  • Ask for a written record, and keep a copy.

Online nikah

Some couples ask about holding a nikah online. Scholars differ, and many advise caution except in necessity, with the wali and witnesses properly involved. It also does not make a legal marriage by itself. See long-distance Muslim marriages.
