Is an online nikah valid?
More couples ask whether a nikah can be done over video, especially when one spouse is abroad. The answer has two parts: whether it is valid religiously, which scholars discuss, and whether it is legal, which depends on the country. This is general information, not a ruling or legal advice.
The religious question
A nikah requires the free consent of both spouses, an offer and acceptance, the wali (in most schools of thought), two witnesses and the mahr. The question is whether these can be met over a video link.
Scholars differ. Some contemporary scholars and fiqh councils accept a nikah by live video where the conditions are all met and the identities are certain, particularly in genuine necessity. Others do not accept it, or advise strongly against it, because of concerns about certainty, presence and misuse. Because of this disagreement, many advise a nikah in person wherever possible.
Conditions scholars who accept it usually set
- Live audio and video, not a recording or messages
- Both spouses (or the wali and the spouse) clearly consenting, and heard by the witnesses
- The identity of each person established with certainty
- Two qualified witnesses who hear the offer and acceptance
- The wali involved and the mahr agreed
- A record made, such as a signed nikah certificate
Ask a scholar from your own tradition which of these applies to you.
The legal question
A video nikah is generally not a legal marriage in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia. Legal marriages follow a country’s own steps, such as a licence or notice and an authorised officiant, and the parties usually need to be present. A nikah by video may be religiously valid for some, yet leave you without legal protection. See is a nikah legally recognised?
If one of you lives abroad
The safer route for most couples is to meet, involve both families, and hold a nikah in person plus whatever legal steps apply. Read marrying a spouse from abroad and long-distance Muslim marriages.
Red flags
Be careful if someone pressures you into a quick online nikah, asks you to keep it secret from your family, or asks for money. A nikah is a serious contract. Read how to spot fake profiles.

Frequently asked questions
Is a nikah over Zoom valid?
Scholars differ. Some accept it with strict conditions in necessity, and others advise against it. Ask a scholar from your tradition.
Is an online nikah legal in the UK or USA?
Generally no. A legal marriage needs the country’s own steps, usually in person. A video nikah does not replace them.
Do I need a wali for an online nikah?
In most schools of thought, yes. The wali’s involvement is one of the conditions.
What is safer than an online nikah?
Meeting in person with both families and holding a nikah plus the legal steps. See our guide on marrying a spouse from abroad.
