Nikah certificate: what it is, and what it is not
After a nikah, couples are often given a nikah certificate or nikah nama. It is an important record, but in most Western countries it is not the same as a legal marriage certificate. This guide explains the difference and how to protect yourself. It is general information, not legal advice.
What is a nikah certificate?
A nikah certificate records that a nikah took place: the names of the spouses, the date, the mahr, the wali and witnesses, and often the officiant. It is issued by the imam, mosque or Islamic centre that conducted the ceremony.
It is valuable proof of the religious marriage, and the mahr and any conditions recorded in it matter if there is a later dispute. See the Islamic marriage contract.
Is it the same as a legal marriage certificate?
Usually not. A legal marriage certificate is issued by the state after the legal steps are completed. In the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, a nikah certificate on its own is generally not accepted as proof of a legal marriage, unless the nikah was also conducted in a way that meets the legal requirements.
If the imam is also an authorised officiant and the legal steps were followed, the ceremony can produce both. Otherwise many couples hold a civil ceremony as well. See is a nikah legally recognised?
Country by country
- UK: a nikah in an unregistered venue is generally not a legal marriage. See nikah in the UK and how to register a Muslim marriage.
- USA: you need a state licence and an authorised officiant. See nikah in the USA.
- Canada: provincial licence and an authorised officiant. See nikah in Canada.
- Australia: an authorised celebrant and a Notice of Intended Marriage. See nikah in Australia.
What a good nikah certificate should contain
- Full legal names of both spouses, and the wali and two witnesses
- Date and place of the nikah
- The mahr, clearly stated, and whether it is prompt or deferred
- Any agreed conditions
- The officiant’s name and signature
Keep several copies, and store a scanned copy safely.
Why women should be especially careful
If a marriage is not legally recognised, a wife can have less protection over property, maintenance and inheritance if the marriage ends. Many scholars and community leaders encourage couples to register the marriage legally as well.

Frequently asked questions
Is a nikah certificate legally valid?
Usually not on its own. A legal marriage needs the state’s steps to be followed. Check the rules in your country and ask your imam.
Can I use a nikah certificate for immigration?
Rarely on its own. Immigration authorities generally look for a legally recognised marriage, so check the official rules and speak to an adviser.
What if I lose my nikah certificate?
Ask the mosque or imam that issued it for a copy, and keep scans in a safe place.
What is a nikah nama?
It is the marriage contract used in many South Asian communities. See our guide to nikah nama.
