Marriage licence and nikah in Illinois.
To be legally married in Illinois you need a marriage licence from the county clerk, such as the Cook County Clerk, and an authorised officiant to perform the ceremony. Many imams can officiate, so the nikah and the legal marriage are often done together.
Illinois licences are only valid for a limited period after they are issued, so check the current rules with the county clerk and plan the licence around your nikah date.
