Muslim wedding FAQ: bridesmaids, white dress, best man and more

If you are planning a Muslim wedding in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia, or attending one as a guest, you may have questions that blend religion and culture. The key is to separate what Islam requires from what is custom. Here are answers to the questions we hear most.

What does Islam actually require?

The essentials of a valid nikah are consent from both spouses, an offer and acceptance, witnesses, the mahr and, in most schools of thought, the wali. Everything else, including the dress, the music and the guests, is culture and family preference. Read what is nikah?

Do Muslim brides wear white?

Some do, and many do not. In South Asian weddings brides often wear red, in Arab and North African weddings colours and embroidery vary, and in Western settings white is common. Islam does not specify a colour. The dress is expected to be modest, and the choice is the bride’s and her family’s.

Do Muslim weddings have bridesmaids and a best man?

Islam does not require them. Some couples include bridesmaids and groomsmen as a modern or Western custom, and others do not. Some families have a friend or sibling who plays a similar role.

What is the difference between a nikah and a walima?

The nikah is the contract. The walima is the wedding feast, a sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, hosted by the groom. Some couples hold both on the same day and others separate them. See what is walima?

How long does the nikah take?

The nikah itself can take as little as 15 to 30 minutes. The wider wedding events take much longer. See how long does a nikah ceremony take?

Is music allowed?

Scholars differ. Many couples use the duff (a frame drum) and nasheeds, and some allow other music. Ask your imam, and respect the preferences of your families.

Do men and women sit separately?

Many weddings have separate or partitioned seating, and others are mixed with modest dress. Check with the hosts if you are a guest.

What should a guest wear and bring?

Dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees at least. Women may be asked to cover their hair at the nikah. A card or a gift is appreciated, and nobody expects anything in particular. Do not bring alcohol.

Is a Muslim wedding legal?

A nikah is religiously valid, but a legal marriage needs the legal steps for your country. See is a nikah legally recognised? and nikah certificate.
