Marriage guide

Is an Islamic marriage recognised in Ireland?

A nikah is a valid religious marriage, but Irish law has its own rules for a legal marriage. This guide explains the general picture. It is not legal advice, so check the current rules with the Civil Registration Service.

The short answer

A nikah on its own is generally not a legal marriage in Ireland. A marriage is legally recognised when it is solemnised by a registered solemniser, after the couple have given notice to the Civil Registration Service, and the other legal requirements are met.

Some imams are registered solemnisers, so one ceremony can be both a nikah and a legal marriage. If yours is not, you can hold a civil ceremony as well.

What the law generally requires

  • Notice to the Civil Registration Service, which must be given well in advance, generally at least three months before the wedding
  • A registered solemniser who conducts the ceremony
  • Two witnesses and the legal declarations
  • Both parties free to marry and of legal age

Check current requirements with the Civil Registration Service.

Why it matters

If a marriage is not legally recognised, there can be less protection over property, support and inheritance if it ends, and it can complicate immigration. See the nikah certificate and is a nikah legally recognised?

Frequently asked questions

Is a nikah legal in Ireland?

Not on its own. It is legal if a registered solemniser conducts it after notice to the Civil Registration Service. Ask your imam if they are registered.

How much notice do I need to give?

Notice must be given well in advance, generally at least three months. Check the current rules.

Can I have a civil ceremony as well?

Yes. Many couples hold a civil ceremony to make the marriage legal alongside the nikah.
