Marrying a spouse from abroad and bringing them to Australia
Many Australian Muslims marry someone from overseas. It is a big decision with legal steps. This is general information only. Immigration rules change, so use the Department of Home Affairs website or a registered migration agent.
The two routes in outline
- Prospective Marriage visa. For a fiancé(e) to come to Australia to marry the sponsor. It generally requires that the couple have met in person and that they marry within a set time after arrival.
- Partner visa. For a spouse or partner of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, from inside or outside Australia.
Eligibility and process are set by the Department of Home Affairs, and they change. Check the official site.
The marriage must be valid
For immigration, the marriage generally needs to be legally valid where it took place. A nikah without the registration that country requires may not be enough. Make sure it is registered and you hold the official certificate.
Keep records
Applications look at whether the relationship is genuine. Keep photos, messages, travel records and evidence of family involvement.
Be careful
Watch for anyone who asks for money, rushes the marriage or avoids video calls. See how to spot fake profiles. Use a registered migration agent or lawyer if you need help, and avoid anyone promising a guaranteed result. See the international Muslim marriage guide.
Meeting someone in Australia
Zawaj is a Muslim marriage app built around nikah: written proposals instead of swiping, a Chaperone/Wali feature so family can be involved, and calls only once a proposal is accepted. It is free to join on iOS and Android.
