Nikah in Toronto and the GTA: how to do it right

Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area have many mosques, imams and venues, which makes a nikah easy to arrange. The key is making sure it is also legally valid in Ontario. This is general information, not legal advice.

Step 1: choose an imam or officiant

Ask your mosque or Islamic centre. Check that the imam is a registered officiant in Ontario if you want the nikah to be your legal marriage as well. If not, plan a civil ceremony.

Step 2: get a marriage licence

In Ontario, a marriage licence is obtained from a municipal office before the ceremony. You will need identification, and anyone who has been married before may need proof the earlier marriage ended. Check the current requirements on the City of Toronto or Ontario government websites.

Step 3: the ceremony

The nikah needs consent, a wali for the bride in most schools of thought, two witnesses and a mahr. Read what is nikah? and what is mahr? Many couples add the legal declarations in the same ceremony.

Step 4: register and get your certificate

The officiant registers the marriage with the province, and you can then order a legal marriage certificate. Keep your nikah certificate too. See the nikah certificate.

Venues and walima

Many Toronto-area venues offer halal catering and separate seating. Read what is a walima? and our venue checklist, which applies anywhere.
