Nikah in London: imams, venues and making it legal

London has a large number of mosques, Islamic centres and imams who conduct nikahs. The legal side is where couples most often go wrong. This guide explains how to arrange a nikah in London and make the marriage legally valid. It is general information, not legal advice, so check the current rules with your local register office.

Step 1: decide how you will make it legal

In England and Wales, a nikah on its own is generally not a legal marriage unless the venue is registered for marriages and the legal steps are followed. Many mosques are not registered, in which case couples have a civil ceremony at a register office as well. Others have a registered building and an authorised person who can register the marriage during the nikah.

Ask this first: “Is the venue registered, and is there an authorised person or will a registrar attend?” If not, plan a civil ceremony.

Step 2: give notice at the register office

For a legal marriage you normally give notice of marriage at your local register office, and a waiting period applies before the ceremony can take place. The rules and timings change, so check the current guidance on the official government website and with your borough’s register office. If either of you has been married before or lives abroad, extra documents are required.

Step 3: find an imam and choose the venue

Many couples ask the mosque they attend, or a family’s imam. If you do not have one, see how to find an imam for nikah. Ask about availability, whether a wali and two male witnesses are needed, the paperwork, and whether the venue can host a short nikah followed by a walima.

Step 4: hold the nikah

The nikah has its own conditions: consent from both spouses, offer and acceptance, witnesses, the mahr and, in most schools of thought, the wali. See what is nikah?, what is mahr? and the Islamic marriage contract. If you are a revert, read who can be your wali.

After the wedding

Keep your nikah certificate and, if you completed the legal steps, your marriage certificate. See nikah certificate and how to register a Muslim marriage. For a wedding checklist, read the Muslim wedding checklist.
